Ehud Barak extends warm hand to prime minister in Greece

Defense minister travels to Greece for a series of diplomatic meetings to increase cooperation between the two countries • Officially thanks Greece for its help with 2010 Carmel fires and says both countries represent ancient civilizations.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak is currently visiting Greece in an effort to warm relations between the two countries. On Tuesday, he met with his Greek counterpart, Defense Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos, as well as Greek President Dr. Karolos Papoulias, Greek Prime Minister Loukas Papadimos, and the head of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff, Gen. Michail Kostarakos.

Conversations focused on increased security cooperation between Greece and Israel and contemporary regional issues, according to a Defense Ministry statement. Relations between the two countries have picked up in large part due to the steep downgrade in relations between Turkey and Israel.

Barak formally thanked Greece for its assistance in helping to put out the massive Carmel fires in December 2010. He said that Greece and Israel both represent two ancient civilizations whose modern nation-states continue to provide vital contributions to humanity and the world.

“We welcome the expansion of relations between Israel and Greece in all areas, especially in the security field, and we look forward to strengthening the cooperation between the two countries,” Barak noted at the end of the meeting.

On the topic of the Arab Spring, Barak said, “We are witnessing dramatic changes in the Middle East, of a magnitude that we haven’t seen for decades. It is hard to know where those [changes] will lead, and it is important to consider all the scenarios.”

On Wednesday, Barak is scheduled to meet with the Greek foreign minister and security officials.
