Israeli satellite company Spacecom on Sunday successfully launched the AMOS 5 satellite into space. The satellite, launched from Kazakhstan, will provide communications services to local and international television, Internet and telephone clients. Operated by Spacecom, the satellite will undergo a series of tests for several weeks once in space, after which it its commercial services will be offered. AMOS 5 joins AMOS 2 and other satellites already in operation. According to Spacecom, AMOS 5 is scheduled to begin service in 2011 at 17°E a new orbital slot over Africa and will position Spacecom "at the forefront of Africas emerging satellite services market." Once in orbit, the AMOS 5 satellite will feature a fixed pan-African C-band beam and three steerable Ku-band beams all covering Africa with connectivity to Europe and the Middle East and supporting multiple transponders in both C-band and Ku-band. Together with the AMOS 2 and the AMOS 3 satellites co-located at Spacecoms 4°W orbital hot spot, the AMOS 5 satellite will give customers coverage over many of the worlds fastest-growing and highest-demand satellite markets in the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia and Africa.
