Hamas gunman killed in IAF retaliatory strike on Gaza targets

Israel Air Force strikes four targets in the Gaza Strip in pre-dawn attack • Helicopters hit terror cell minutes before it planned to launch mortar shells into Israel • Palestinians report one dead, several injured.

One Palestinian was killed and five others wounded when the Israel Air Force struck four targets in the eastern and southern Gaza Strip in a pre-dawn attack Tuesday, in what the army said was retaliation for a Grad rocket fired into Israel Monday by Palestinian terrorists.

The Israel Defense Forces Spokesperson's Unit said all four targets were hit, and that army helicopters struck a terror cell just minutes before it planned to launch mortar shells into Israel.

Palestinian sources reported one person dead and at least five others wounded in the air strike, according to Israel Army Radio. Palestinian sources told news agencies that the dead man belonged to the Hamas armed wing, the Izzedine Al-Qassam Brigades. Three other Palestinians were wounded in air strikes on military training bases in Khan Younis, Palestinians reported.

"We learned of the martyrdom of the youth Musa Shtawe, 29, who died of his injuries after a strike east of Gaza City," Adham Abu Selmiya, spokesman for the Hamas-run emergency services in the Gaza Strip, is quoted as saying by the AFP news agency.

The strike came in response to a Grad rocket attack from the Gaza Strip Monday night. About 11:20 p.m., the “Color Red” alert was activated in Beersheba. The rocket landed north of Beersheba, causing no injuries or property damage.

The warning siren went off shortly after two members of the Trajtenberg Committee – which has been charged with meeting social justice protesters and formulating responses to their demands – visited the tent city in Beersheba. The protesters camping there fled for cover along with Beersheba residents.

Earlier in August, defense officials redeployed the Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system to Ashkelon, after a week of intensified rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip onto Israel's southern communities.

Iron Dome is designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. It was utilized in Israel's southern communities in March, but was removed because the system was not yet fully operational.
