IDF spokesman Moti Almoz was promoted to major general and commander of the Israel Defense Forces' Personnel Directorate in a ceremony held Thursday at the office of Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot. Eizenkot, along with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman and members of the General Staff were among those in attendance for the ceremony. Almoz replaces Maj. Gen. Hagai Topolansky, who resigned from the position after his military laptop was stolen from his home last month. Despite the circumstances surrounding his resignation, Eizenkot called Topolansky "a model person, in conduct, approach and modesty -- but mostly in the level of requirements and norms that he demanded, first and foremost of himself, and afterward from the units he commanded." Almoz also praised his predecessor, calling him a "partner and friend" and "a symbol of action not taken for anything in return. A model example of the marking of clear lines." Almoz will continue to serve as IDF spokesperson until a successor is found. Also on Thursday, Lt. Col. David Shapira was promoted to commander of the Gefen Battalion at the Bahad 1 officers training base. Shapira is the former battalion commander of convicted Hebron shooter Sgt. Elor Azaria. On Wednesday, Azaria was found guilty by a military court of killing an incapacitated terrorist in March 2016. Shapira currently serves as commander of the Lahav unit's officers course and is responsible for training combat units. He received special mention after he shot a terrorist who had attacked students at the Mercaz Harav Yeshiva in March 2008.
