Spacecom purchases advanced Amos-17 satellite from Boeing

Spacecom President and CEO David Pollack says state of the art satellite will provide reliable solutions and offer "a unique competitive advantage to our community of customers" • Amos-17 set to launch in 2019, following $161 million acquisition deal.

Israel's Spacecom announced Wednesday a deal with Boeing for the purchase of the Amos-17 satellite, along with additional services.

The new satellite is set to replace the Amos-5 communications satellite, with which contact was lost in 2015, after it reached its designated position in orbit. In another loss earlier this year, the Amos-6 communications satellite was destroyed in an explosion prior to its launch.

The new Amos-17 satellite is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2019.

According to Spacecom, Amos-17 will allow the company to grow via the provision of communication services to Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

The deal, which includes the satellite and its systems, ground control center components, launch support services and operation support and services, amounts to some $161 million.

Spacecom President and CEO David Pollack said of the deal, "Amos-17 is an advanced, multibeam satellite with particularly high bandwidth in several frequency ranges that will provide reliable solutions and offer a unique competitive advantage to our community of customers. ... It comprehensively integrates strategies to expand the communications space, thanks to its innovative design and the variety of services that it offers, which provide a response to the growing needs of the company's customers."
