Sara Netanyahu: We will always cherish Peres' memory

"Even when political or diplomatic differences arose ... I saw two leaders who, above all else, had their country and people's best interests at heart," PM Netanyahu's wife Sara says of her husband and his former political rival, the late Shimon Peres.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, paid tribute to former President Shimon Peres, who died on Wednesday, aged 93, two weeks after suffering a massive stroke.

"This is a sad and difficult day for us all," she told Channel 2 News. "I truly hoped and believed that he would be with us for many years to come, and on a more personal note, I was always very fond of him and had nothing but the outmost admiration for Shimon."

Discussing Peres' relationship with the prime minister, Sara Netanyahu said, "Even when political or diplomatic differences arose between these two men, two leaders, I could tell that they had more in common than less. I saw two leaders who, above all else, had their country and people's best interests at heart. Also, they made very similar statements.

"I think Shimon was kind-hearted and altogether a wonderful man. There was never any personal rivalry. On the contrary, there was a lot of mutual respect and a lot of affection.

"Shimon possessed many nuances that reminded me of my late father -- they were more or less the same age, and were born in the same region. Shimon was not only a great leader, he was a pleasant man, whom one felt very comfortable to associate with. We shall always cherish the memory of this remarkable man with much love in our hearts."
