Hero driver turns bus into ambulance, saves woman's life

After being told it will take 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive, bus driver Roey Levy takes unconscious passenger in her 40s to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, with other passengers still on board • Levy: I felt I had to help.

A resourceful bus driver is being lauded as a hero for turning his bus into a makeshift ambulance and saving the life of one of his passengers Thursday.

Roey Levy, a driver for the Egged bus company, wasted no time when he learned that one of his passengers, a woman in her 40s, had lost consciousness and collapsed, and drove as quickly as possible to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, with all the other passengers still on board.

When the bus arrived at the entrance to the hospital's Emergency Medicine Department, hospital staff rushed to the bus, where they began treating the woman.

According to Levy, the woman collapsed while the bus was making its way through Haifa's Hadar neighborhood.

He said he made the decision "to shut the doors and rush to the hospital" when he learned it would take an ambulance 20 minutes to arrive.

Rambam Medical Center praised his quick thinking and said, "His actions saved this woman's life."

"When I saw the passenger's son, I felt as if I was looking at my own children and I felt I had to help him. As far as I'm concerned, it wasn't that big a deal. After we dropped her off at the emergency room, I took the bus and got back to driving as usual," Levy said.

David Ratner, a spokesman for the hospital, said the woman had regained consciousness and was under observation.
