Two people were killed and 15 others were hurt, one critically, in a massive brawl that erupted in the southern Bedouin town of Kuseife on Saturday. The initial investigation into the incident suggested that members of a local family had deliberately run over members of a rival family, sparking the clash, which involved exchanges of fire. Police were quickly dispatched to the scene to restore the peace. Eight of the wounded are still hospitalized, one in critical condition. "We received a report of multiple casualties and immediately dispatched in large numbers," recounted one senior Magen David Adom paramedic. "We joined up with a number of private vehicles outside the village on the main road that were evacuating the wounded. We immediately transported the victims -- most of whom sustained injuries to the head and extremities -- in ambulances and ambulatory intensive care vehicles to the hospital while providing emergency care." Salem Abu Rabiyeh, the head of the Kuseife council, told Army Radio Sunday that "we have declared a general strike in the town because we are in mourning and to show support for the families and outrage over this behavior." "This is one of the calmest Bedouin communities," he added, "but unfortunately we have now joined the not-so-respectable club of violence."
