Cabinet increases planned minimum wage rise

Minimum wage, which was to rise to 5,000 shekels ($1,290) per month on Jan. 1, 2017, will now rise to NIS 5,300 ($1,370) • Current minimum wage is NIS 4,825 ($1,213) • Economy Ministry says move is "step toward reducing socio-economic gaps in Israel."

The cabinet on Sunday approved an amendment setting the minimum wage in Israel at 5,300 shekels ($1,370) per month, NIS 300 ($78) higher than a previously approved hike in the minimum wage.

The Economy Ministry said the revision "is another step toward reducing socio-economic gaps in Israel."

A three-stage rise in the minimum wage was ordered by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in December 2014. The first stage took effect in April, and raised the minimum wage from NIS 4,300 ($1,081) to NIS 4,650 ($1,169). The second stage took effect in August, and raised the minimum wage to NIS 4,825 ($1,213) .

The third rise is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2017, when the minimum wage was set to rise to NIS 5,000 ($1,290), but now will rise to NIS 5,300.

Outgoing Economy Minister Aryeh Deri welcomed the move, saying the amendment "offers assurances to employers and employees both, and I believe it will result in an overall pay raise for all workers."
