Tel Aviv ranks among world's top financial centers

2015 Global Financial Centers Index ranks Tel Aviv as the world's 25th top financial center • Tel Aviv edges up two slots from 2014 and seven places up since index's 2007 debut • London, New York and Hong Kong named world's top three economic hubs.

The 2015 Global Financial Centers Index, released Tuesday, ranked Tel Aviv as the world's 25th top financial center.

Published twice a year, the GFCI, compiled by the Z/Yen Group, a London-based commercial think tank, ranks the world's 84 leading financial cities based on data from the World Economic Forum, the U.N., World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and other sources.

According to Business Insider, cities are evaluated across several dimensions, including business environment, financial sector development, infrastructure, human capital, and reputation, as well as a series of other parameters meant to gauge their financial services' diversity.

London topped the 2015 GFCI, followed by New York and Hong Kong. Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, Zurich, Toronto, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. joined the three to make up the top 10 financial centers in the world.

As the world's 25th most robust financial center, Tel Aviv outperformed other major cities, such as Abu Dhabi, ranked 28th, Beijing (29), Stockholm (32), Rio de Janeiro (35), Amsterdam (36), Paris (37), Oslo (67), Moscow (78) and Madrid (79).

Greece's struggling capital of Athens ranked 83, and Iceland's Reykjavik ranked last on the list, as the world's 84th financial center.

Tel Aviv has improved its position by seven slots since the Global Financial Centers Index was first published in 2007. The Israeli metropolis ranked 27 on the 2014 index.

Hila Oren, director of Tel Aviv Global, a municipal company dedicated to improving the city's international appeal, said the ranking "reflects the municipality's tireless efforts to position Tel Aviv as a global financial center and the gateway to the Israeli market."

Tel Aviv has been featured in top places in several global surveys over the past few years: In 2010, Lonely Planet, the world's leading travel guide, has ranked the city third on its list of the world's best cities over its vibrant nightlife, music scenes and liberal culture; in 2012, the Huffington Post named Tel Aviv among its eight best party beaches in the world; later in 2012 Canada's Globe and Mail named Tel Aviv as one of the world's five most creative cities; and Cond Nast Traveler magazine named the city third on its list of the world's 14 best cities for architecture.
