Right-wing politician arrested for allegedly praying at Temple Mount

Moshe Feiglin denies alleged offense, released unconditionally after hearing at Jerusalem Magistrate's Court • Rules at the Temple Mount holy site state that Jews may visit but not pray there.

Right-wing politician Moshe Feiglin was arrested on Tuesday during a visit to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem for allegedly attempting to pray, a violation of the rules at the holy site.

According to police, Feiglin dropped to the ground and began to chant a prayer. He was detained and brought in for police questioning along with another right-wing activist.

Feiglin, who serves as the head of the Manhigut Yehudit (Jewish Leadership) faction in the Likud party, denied the alleged offense.

The police decided to release the two detained men on conditions, including a prohibition on visiting the Temple Mount. Feiglin refused to sign the release document, prompting a hearing at the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court. The judge ruled to release Feiglin unconditionally.

Police said they intend to recommend that charges be brought against Feiglin for violating a legal order and disturbing public peace.

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem's Old City is holy both to Jews and Muslims. The site is managed by the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, with Israeli police in charge of security. According to Israeli rules set for the site, Jews are permitted to visit but not pray there.
