Dreaming of Givati: The fighters who are always first

As a new group of recruits joins the Givati Brigade, their commander sends them a message: During Operation Protective Edge, the brigade operated with determination, professionalism and heroism. That is how it was, and that's how it will be.

Welcome, July 2015 class of Givati!

Today, you are standing at the gates of the brigade. You have a long, meaningful, and exhausting road ahead of you, by the end of which you will become fighters in the brigade units. From today, you will be a part of a special brigade that has a glorious history in defending the country from the time it was founded through today. Being a Givati fighter is a great privilege that is won by very hard work, by sweat, by dedication and endless commitment.

The purple beret you'll put on a few months and many kilometers from now, followed by the insignia, symbolize persistence in reaching goals, professionalism, heroism and comradeship. The brigade tradition commits us; its battle legacy starts with the earliest days of the nation, when its soldiers pushed back the Egyptian army, and is the same today.

Thus it was last summer, when the Givati Brigade was again called up for a mission. As always, it was the first to arrive. The brigade's commanders and soldiers were the first ones to advance into Gaza to contain the enemy threat. During Operation Protective Edge, the brigade operated with determination, professionalism and heroism. The fighters attacked courageously and struck a blow to the enemy, and unquestionably operated with both professionalism and values. The many stories of heroic actions from the battles the brigade took part in are testimony to that.

That's how it was. That's how it is. That's how it will be.

In Givati, all sectors of the nation serve together, side by side. This is one family, united, that you will now be an inseparable part of. With us, everyone works shoulder to shoulder. In Givati, we win together!

I want to welcome you, the new recruits, and your families, and wish you an easy induction and a meaningful, useful service. I'm sure that you will prove yourselves through responsibility and hard work. Remember that from now on, "Anyone who dreamed Givati, anyone who breathed Givati, anyone who traveled our path with us -- comes back to Givati, repeats the name Givati, with Givati goes ahead!"

Good luck!

Col. Yaron Finkelman is the commander of the Givati Brigade.
