On Sunday, MK Sharon Gal of Yisrael Beytenu called for a vote on a bill he penned that would ease the conditions under which capital punishment could be applied to convicted terrorists. Though the bill has been sent for committee examination and the vote delayed for now, the issue raised a debate in Israeli society: Should terrorists receive the death penalty- Will terrorists, many of whom set out on suicide missions, really be deterred by the death penalty? Is the death penalty in this case even about deterrence, or is it about sending a message that Israel will not tolerate terrorism- If the bill passes, should the death penalty be limited to those who carry out attacks or should it also apply to those who send them- In this edition of Israel Hayom Insider, host Lital Shemesh speaks to VoiceofIsrael.com Web Editor Ruthie Blum and Israel Hayom Opinion Editor Steve Ganot to get a sense of why Israelis might favor or oppose the death penalty. Anchor: Lital Shemesh. Camera: Doron Persaud. Makeup: Omay Shitrit. Archive: Roy Castro, Reuters.
