Shmuel Ben-Artzi, father of Sara Netanyahu, dies at 97

Ben-Artzi, a writer and teacher who fought for Israel's independence, was the father-in-law of Israel's prime minister • Born in Poland in 1914, he made aliyah in 1933.

Shmuel Ben-Artzi, father-in-law of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, passed away on Wednesday at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He was 97.

Ben-Artzi is the father of Sara Netanyahu, who married Netanyahu in 1997. Ben-Artzi was born in Poland in 1914 and made aliyah in 1933. In the years before Israel's Declaration of Independence, he fought in the Irgun and later worked as a schoolteacher.

Ben-Artzi wrote and published two books examining the early years of the state of Israel and his experiences as a yeshiva student. In his last few years, Ben-Artzi lived at the Prime Minister's Residence in Jerusalem.
