Government to commemorate slain minister Rehavam Ze'evi

A decade after Ze'evi's assassination, government officially honors him at two events • Ze'evi was killed by PFLP activists in 2001 • President, prime minister and Ze'evi's family expected to attend Mt. Herzl ceremony.

The government, the Knesset and members of slain minister Rehavam Ze'evi's family will, in a number of state ceremonies this week, mark a decade since his murder by Palestinian terrorists. The two main memorial events, one on Mount Herzl and one at the Menachem Begin Heritage Center, both in Jerusalem, are scheduled to take place on Thursday.

Ze'evi was shot by four Palestinian gunman at the Jerusalem Hyatt Hotel on Mount Scopus on Oct. 17, 2001. He later died of his wounds at the Hadassah Medical Center. The Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) claimed responsibility for the assassination, saying it was revenge for the assassination of the group's secretary-general, Abu Ali Mustafa, whom Israel had killed in August of that year. The four gunmen were arrested and held initially in Jericho, under American and British guard, and later moved to Israel where they were sentenced and tried.

President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, several other ministers and Ze'evi's family will all be in attendance at the ceremony on Mount Herzl, the main Israeli cemetery for military and political heroes. The event at the Begin Heritage Center is sponsored by the Information Directorate of the Prime Minister's Office. On Wednesday, there will also be an official ceremony in memory of Ze'evi during the Knesset plenum session.
