WATCH: Will France recognize a Palestinian state?

After the U.K., Ireland, Spain and Sweden, among others, gave some level of recognition to a Palestinian state, now it is France's turn. The parliamentary resolution, sponsored by the ruling Socialist Party, would give symbolic recognition to Palestine, but the French government regards it as nonbinding. It is expected to pass, despite opposition by former President Nicolas Sarkozy, who heads the conservative UMP party.

Why is the French parliament making this move now? If the resolution passes, how will it affect French-Israeli relations? And what lessons should Israel draw from this diplomatic milestone-
