Sgt. Nadav Raimond

Fallen IDF soldiers laid to rest

Funerals held for Sgts. Nadav Raimond, Sagi Erez, Daniel Kedmi, Dor Dery and Barkey Ishai Shor, all killed in the cross-border tunnel attack near Gaza on Monday in which terrorists fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF post.

Five Israeli soldiers who were killed by terrorists near the Gaza border on Monday were laid to rest on Tuesday. The five were killed when terrorists emerged from a cross-border tunnel about 150 meters inside Israel and fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF post.

Sgt. Nadav Raimond, 19, of the Paratroopers Brigade, was buried in the military section of the Shadmot Dvora cemetery in the Lower Galilee. At his funeral, his mother, Yuval, recalled her last conversation with her son on the phone: "Last Friday, you spoke with us for a bit longer than usual. You talked about playing backgammon, checkers, and you joked that when the campaign is over, you would need medical treatment for the overconsumption of sugar. You were in a good mood. We could imagine your heart-warming smile, the smile we love so much."

Raimond is survived by his parents, Avi and Yuval, and his brothers, Noam and Yoav.

Sgt. Sagi Erez, 19, of the Givati Brigade, was laid to rest in the Haifa military cemetery at a funeral attended by thousands.

"From a young age, you always carved out your own clear path, and achieved every goal you set for yourself," his mother said at the funeral. "We love you and we miss you. I am not parting from you. You will always be with me in my heart. I love you, my king."

Erez's family visited his base a week before he died, bringing his entire battalion hundreds of chicken sandwiches.

Erez is survived by his parents, Ilan and Edna, and his younger sisters, Noam and Shai.

Sgt. Daniel Kedmi, 19, of the Kfir Brigade, was buried in the military section of the Kiryat Shaul cemetery.

Kedmi’s commander, 2nd Lt. Or Tzarfati, said of him, "Daniel, my warrior, my friend, my boy. We spent a long time together, in training exercises, in treks. You were my right hand, someone I could trust."

Kedmi's parents said they had a bad feeling when they last spoke to their son on Friday. His mother described their last phone call: "He said, 'Mom, I love you.' And I told him, 'Don't tell me you love me now. First, get out of there, come home, and when we see each other, I will tell you that I love you.' But something in my soul was unsettled."

Kedmi is survived by his parents, Boaz and Tamar, and his siblings, Yossi, Ori and Natalie.

Sgt. Dor Dery, 18, of the Kfir Brigade, was buried at the Mount Herzl military cemetery.

Dery's brother, Avichai, spoke at his funeral: "He knew how to make everyone laugh. Dor was our pride. Everywhere he went, people talked about him."

Dery was recognized for exemplary conduct in his brigade.

He is survived by his parents, David and Ronit, and three siblings.

Sgt. Barkey Ishai Shor, 21, of the Kfir Brigade, was also buried at the Mount Herzl military cemetery.

His father spoke of Shor's long hours spent volunteering with Magen David Adom emergency services, among other organizations.

"Our Barkey, our dear child, who volunteered with all his heart," he said. "Whenever he saw someone at the side of the road, he stopped to help. He wanted us to take two cars just so we could help more hitchhikers."

Barkey is survived by his parents, Yaron and Rivkah, and three siblings.
