The abduction of Israeli teenagers Eyal Yifrach, Gil-ad Shaer and Naftali Frenkel has seen a torrent of unfounded rumors about the military operation striving to secure their safe return and about their fate flood various social media platforms since Friday.

IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Moti Almoz on Monday categorically denied rumors circulated by an unknown individual or individuals that suggested the three were no longer alive.

The persistent rumors regarding the abducted teens began on Friday, when social media platforms were abuzz with reports alleging the operation had concluded and the three had been released, safe.

On Monday, hundreds of users of the mobile messaging application WhatsApp received a message reading, "Unfortunately, a report has just come in, still under a partial gag order, saying that the three abductees were killed by the two terrorists who kidnapped them, shortly after they were abducted."

The message went on to say, "According to a source, the three abductees fought their abductors when they were taken and were immediately shot with a submachine gun. They found spent bullets and burned kippot in the burned car."

An IDF Spokesperson's Unit statement issued on Monday afternoon said, "The IDF wants to clarify that the rumors being spread over the past few hours regarding the fate of the abducted Israeli teens are utterly unfounded and irresponsible.

"The IDF is the only credible source for information on this case. The IDF spokesperson urges the public to act responsibly and refrain from spreading unfounded rumors."
