Education minister approves nomination of Professor Irad Malkin, of Tel Aviv University, for his work in history • Malkin specializes in ancient Greece, specifically Sparta.

Professor Irad Malkin, a professor of ancient Greek history at Tel Aviv University, will receive this year's prestigious Israel Prize for his research in the field of general history, Education Minister Shai Piron announced on Sunday.

Piron approved the nominating committee's decision to award Malkin with the medal, which is handed out annually to candidates in various fields such as social sciences, culture and the arts, and the natural or exact sciences. The committee is headed by Professor Miriam Yardeni.

The committee cited Malkin's extensive research on the ancient Spartans as his greatest achievement.

He "made a breakthrough positioning Sparta as a maritime power," the committee said in a statement. "His second significant contribution is his research into Greek migration and settlement. Professor Malkin contributed greatly to research covering Mediterranean civilization, to many students in Israel and abroad."
