President Shimon Peres may have set a world record on Thursday, when he presided over a one-of-its-kind online civics class.
The Presidential Class, an event sponsored by networking giant Cisco, had some 7,500 Israeli students convene at more than 55 school auditoriums and classrooms to watch Peres give his online lecture. Peres, who was speaking at Cisco's Israeli headquarters in Netanya, told the students about his vision for peace and implored them to act without delay to improve Israeli society.
"We dreamed big, and we achieved our dreams. That means that we didn't dream big enough," Peres said. "When President Barack Obama came to Israel, before he was elected, he asked me for advice. I told him, 'Anytime someone tells you the future belongs to the younger generation, you must throw him out of the room. It is the present that belongs to the youth, not the future. Leave the future to me, I have time.'"
Guinness World Records Senior Vice President Marco Frigatti arrived in Israel on Wednesday. Frigatti, who is in charge of the organization's record adjudication team, monitored the event from a special room, along with school officials.
