Israel successfully tested the Arrow 3 missile interceptor system on Friday morning. This was the interceptor's second successful test. It completed its flight plan in full, meeting every one of the experiment's goals. The test fire, held at 8 a.m. at a launch facility in central Israel, was headed by the Administration for the Development of Weapons and the Technological Industry at the Defense Ministry, in collaboration with the U.S. Missile Defense Agency -- a U.S. Defense Department division responsible for developing layered defenses against ballistic missiles. According to a Defense Ministry statement, Arrow 3 is equipped with a revolutionary interceptor system that will enable Israel to effectively counter future security threats. Arrow 3, which is meant to defend Israel against long-range missiles, is a pivotal part of the country's multilayered missile defense outline, alongside the already-operational Iron Dome and Arrow 2 systems and the David's Sling missile defense system, which is currently being developed. The Defense Ministry noted that the successful test fire "serves as an important milestone in the State of Israel's operational ability to defend itself against the foreseen threats in the regional theater." "This was another test in what stands to be a lengthy development process and the system will undergo additional tests prior to becoming operational," it stated. "I would like congratulate the defense establishment and the Israel Aerospace Industries, as well as our American partners on the Arrow 3's successful test," Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon said in a statement Friday. "The State of Israel continues to develop breakthrough weapons systems meant to defend the Israeli public and infrastructure. The development of these types of systems will allow Israel to deal with the treats we are facing and it will help the IDF mount a swift and decisive response, should one be necessary." According to Ya'alon, "The development of the Arrow 3 system is another dimension in Israel's advanced active defense systems and alongside formidable offensive capabilities and sophisticated intelligence abilities, the defense establishment and the IDF will continue to be world leaders in these fields, while first and foremost defending the State of Israel and its citizens from anyone who wishes to harm us." The Arrow defense system was developed by the IAI in collaboration with Boeing.
