Labor MK Omer Bar-Lev, a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, said that committee chairman Avigdor Lieberman has refused to convene the body to discuss developments in Syria.
"This seriously damages the functioning of the committee and shows contempt for the democratic system," Bar-Lev said.
"It cannot be that a storm raging in the international arena that has direct implications for Israel will pass over the heads of committee members without them receiving the basic information needed to fulfill their duties."
"As a public emissary, I have the duty to supervise defense preparations and voice my opinion on the matter to professional entities. It's outrageous that information is being concentrated among only members of the security cabinet while the institution that is supposed to oversee them is completely compartmentalized from what is happening. The chairman's decision is troubling and raises questions."
In response, Lieberman said, "Unfortunately, some are looking for headlines at any cost, even at the expense of national responsibility. The Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee is closely following the matter (Syria) and we have no intention of creating unnecessary hysteria to satisfy the desire for publicity of one MK or another."
