Police chief Danino's tenure extended by one year

Decision comes as no surprise to police and ministry officials, unlike his relations with former police chief Dudi Cohen, Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch and Police Commissioner Yohanan Danino see eye to eye on many initiatives.

Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch decided to extend Police Commissioner Insp. Gen. Yohanan Danino's tenure by one year, Channel 2 News reported on Thursday.

The decision to extend Danino's tenure came as no surprise to police and Public Security Ministry officials. Unlike his relations with former police chief Dudi Cohen, Aharonovitch sees eye to eye with Danino on many initiatives. These include programs to increase public trust and perceived safety such as urban policing, considered Aharonovitch's flagship project, as well as changes inside the police department.

Aharonovitch and Danino also agree on most promotions and dismissals within the police.

While in the past they reportedly have had problems with one another, over the past year their working relationship has improved. Aharonovitch's close associates said, "He is content with the changes happening with the police during Danino's tenure as part of the 'turnaround' program the commissioner has led." The turnaround program's stated goal is increasing public trust of the police and its sense of safety.
