Delphi, Israel's Mobileye join forces on self-drive system

U.K.-based electronics developer partners with Jerusalem-based computer vision startup in a bid to develop a fully autonomous car • New platform to be showcased at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas • Production objectives set for 2019.

Auto parts and electronics company Delphi Automotive announced Tuesday it was joining forces with Israeli software developer Mobileye to produce the building blocks for a fully autonomous car in about two years.

Delphi and Mobileye plan to build a complete autonomous driving platform that they will sell to automakers worldwide. The project will result "in an end-to-end production-intent fully automated vehicle solution, with the level of performance and functional safety required for rapid integration into diverse vehicle platforms for a range of customers worldwide," the companies said in a joint press release, adding the innovative platform will be demonstrated in combined urban and highway driving at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and production ready for 2019.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Delphi and Mobileye hope to produce off-the-shelf systems for everything from small cars to sport utilities and pickup trucks.

The U.K.-based Delphi is a leading global supplier of technologies for the automotive and commercial vehicle market, introducing components that strive to make vehicles smarter, safer, and greener.

Jerusalem-based Mobileye is at the forefront of computer vision and machine learning developments for advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving.

Tuesday's deal follows an announcement by ride-hailing giant Uber Technologies, which has recently inked a $680 million acquisition deal with Otto Motors, an Israeli startup specializing in converting normal trucks into autonomous ones.
