The High Court of Justice rejected on Sunday an appeal filed by the Movement for Quality Government against the appointment of Shas leader Aryeh Deri as interior minister. Deri, 57, was appointed interior minister in January. He previously served as interior minister from 1988 to 1993 before being forced to resign due to corruption charges against him. In 2000, he was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison for taking bribes while he was interior minister. Deri served just under two years in prison before being set free in July 2002. The court said that the appeal filed by the Movement for Quality Government did not prove a "direct and clear link between the offenses committed by Deri and the role of interior minister." The Movement for Quality Government said it was disappointed in the court's ruling. Just over a month ago, a criminal probe was launched into new corruption allegations against Deri.
