Court delays jailing of Islamic Movement leader

Islamic Movement Northern Branch leader Sheikh Raed Salah had been set to begin serving an 11-month prison sentence for incitement on Sunday • Salah requested a delay as well as an appeal • Attorney general's office to respond to requests in coming days.

Supreme Court Judge Salim Joubran has ruled to delay the 11-month incarceration sentence handed down to the leader of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, Sheikh Raed Salah, until an additional ruling is made.

Salah had been slated to begin serving his prison sentence on charges of incitement on Sunday.

The Supreme Court has instructed the Attorney General's Office to respond within 15 days to Salah's plea to delay the implementation of his sentence, and within 60 days to his request for an appeal.

The decision to delay his punishment was made after Salah's attorney, Avigdor Feldman, filed a petition to appeal the Jerusalem District Court's ruling that sentenced him to prison for incitement to violence and racism.

Salah's sentence was in response to a sermon he gave in front of a large audience and several media outlets in east Jerusalem in 2007. The court found he had made a clear call to the Muslim public to launch a violent intifada in an effort to "liberate" Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque.
