AG considers investigating MK Zoabi for incitement

Following several complaints, police recommend launching incitement investigation against Balad MK Hanin Zoabi, who said Israeli teens' abductors are "not terrorists" • Zoabi: Israel and its policies should be investigated first.

Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein is poised to decide within the next few days whether to launch an incitement investigation against Balad MK Hanin Zoabi.

Weinstein has been asked to weigh in on the matter following several police complaints that been filed against Zoabi, over remarks she made in an interview last week, saying that the abductors of Israeli teens Gil-ad Shaer, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Frenkel were "not terrorists."

According to police sources, Investigations and Intelligence Division Commander Manny Yitzhaki, who reviewed the complaints, supports launching a criminal investigation against the MK, and is said to have recommended doing so to Weinstein and to State Attorney Shai Nitzan.

In response, Zoabi said on Monday, "The police can question me if they want, and anyone who breaks the law should pay a price. However, it is the State of Israel and its policies that should be investigated, not me."

Deputy Interior Minister MK Faina Kirshenbaum (Yisrael ‎Beytenu) urged Weinstein to order an investigation against the controversial MK.

"Unfortunately, this is not the first time that MK Zoabi has used her parliamentary immunity to encourage acts of terror," she said.

President-elect Reuven Rivlin also commented on the matter Monday, saying, "There have been many times in the past when MKs have stretched the [limits] of Israeli democracy thin, but there are times when it is clear that a red line has been crossed. No one should be allowed to infringe on Israeli democracy, and it is up to the police to decide whether or not the line has been crossed."
