Just three weeks after Denmark outlawed kosher slaughtering methods, Britain's chief veterinarian, John Blackwell, has called on the British authorities to ban such traditional methods, whether kosher or halal. Speaking with The Times of London, Blackwell said the traditional kosher method of cutting the neck and allowing the blood to drain needed to undergo change. "They will feel the massive injury of the tissues of the neck. They will perceive the aspiration of blood they will breathe in before they lose consciousness," he said. British Jews responded with outrage. Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, said now was the time to work alongside British Jewry to prevent the infringement on Jewish traditions. He said restricting the freedom of religion was a trend spreading throughout Europe and called on European leaders to counter such initiatives, adding that they are contrary to EU law.
