Rabbi Ovadia Yosef's son pulls out of chief rabbi race

Due to police investigation of Rabbi Avraham Yosef, Shas decides he won't be candidate to become next chief Sephardi rabbi • Rabbi Avraham Yosef's associates say probe is a political hit job • Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef likely to run in his brother's place.

In light of the police investigation of Rabbi Avraham Yosef, Shas decided on Thursday to take him out of the running for chief Sephardi rabbi.

Avraham Yosef is the son of Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. It now appears his brother, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, will run for the position. A final decision will be made in the coming days.

Last week, Ovadia Yosef decided that his son Avraham Yosef would vie for the spot. But the revelation earlier this week of an ongoing police probe of Avraham Yosef changed that.

Avraham Yosef's associates claim the police investigation is a political hit job.

Another potential candidate who has run into troubles is Safed Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu. Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein has given Eliyahu until tomorrow to respond to racist comments that have been attributed to him. Eliyahu denies making such statements but has been asked to comment individually on each comment he was alleged to have said.
